PREPARING TO HAVE YOUR PORTRAIT TAKEN
So you’ve decided to have your portrait taken. Fabulous. It can become a family heirloom, and it’s something individual that captures your special spirit. Whether it’s a formal or informal portrait, a group or individual one, posed or candid, it’s important to do all the right preparation so that the end result is perfection.
Here are a few suggestions from Perth portrait photography studio, Freedom Photography, that’ll make you the star of the show.
The first consideration is what to wear.Portrait photography sittings can go on a bit so dress for comfort.Clothing shouldn’t distract attention away from the subject.Wearing something that’s in keeping with your style and personality will make you feel more relaxed and confident in front of the camera.
Don’t wear clothing with loud floral patterns, checks, stripes, logos and tartans.Classical and low-key is best. Comfort is important as you don’t want to be fighting a scratchy label or squeezing into too-tight pants. Tight clothing can also alter the shape of the body which will look unnatural.
Turtlenecked jumpers or V-necked jumpers are the easiest shape to wear and to photograph as they complement the shape of the face best. It’s preferable to wear a long-sleeved shirt as bare skin can lead the eye away from the face.A collared shirt is a good frame for a face.
Darker colours (black, dark blue, green burgundy, shades of grey) are generally better than lighter ones, which can make people look pale and a bit washed-out. Bright colours, like red and orange are overpowering and can reflect onto the subject’s face.Try and avoid shiny fabric, such as satin, which can reflect the light.
When the portrait photography shoot involves a group of people, it’s an idea to get everyone to wear colours and styles that complement each other. That’s not to say that outfits have to be identical, but you should be looking to create a feeling of cohesiveness and unity so that the faces – not the clothes – attract attention.
If you’re having an individual portrait done – why not bring an extra set of clothes to the sitting?Bring along some treasured accessories (jewellery, hats, jackets, sunglasses) to add that something extra. And don’t forget your make-up bag too – lipstick or lip balm, comb, mirror, foundation or powder…all essential items!
And when it comes to hair – it’s always wise to cater for every eventuality so bring along all your hair accessories – clips, brushes, combs and a light hairspray to keep things orderly. And tempting as it may be, having a hair cut the day before your portrait photography session may not be the best idea.Rather schedule the photo shoot when you’re feeling good about yourself.
Lastly, have a chat to the photography studio before your shoot. They’ll have tips and suggestions about what to do, but it’s up to the individual.Yes, there are some.A portrait photographer in Perth, Freedom Photography says it’s all about the individual. Sometimes pushing the boundaries of convention (like a bare torso revealing an intricate tattoo or a loving couple wearing contrasting colours) has a fantastic result as the gallery on the Freedom Photography website shows – and it’s about developing a trusting partnership between portrait photographer and subject that brings out the best in everyone.
