Comparisons of different mascaras

Like most other aspects of make-up, the search for mascara can be overwhelming. This one lengthens, that one curls. How’s a girl to choose? I am lucky to be blessed with long dark lashes, but I’ve always wanted more volume and curl. I’ve spent time layering coat after coat of this brand with that brand, trying to achieve that movie star on the red carpet look. I’ve accepted the fact that I will never part with my lash curler and spent time searching for that one mascara that will do it all. I’ve tried just about every mascara out there and have listed some of my favorites – and not so favorites – below.

Diorshow Waterproof Mascara – This mascara is my absolute favorite. It has a large, fat brush that always delivers clump-free volume. It really gives me that movie star feel with just one coat. It thickens my lashes at the base and separates them at the ends. It doesn’t get flaky as the day wears on and really has staying power through a good tear-jerker. Diorshow is available in three colors: black, azure blue, and chestnut. It is available at retailers like Nordstrom and Sephora and runs around $23 a tube.

Don’t fret over the cost, this tube will last you months. It has great shelf life and with only one coat needed it is sure to last you months. I rate this mascara 5 out of 5 stars. Cover Girl VolumeExact Mascara – This mascara utilizes the new LashExact brush to eliminate clumps and maximize volume. It is available in four shades: very black, black, black/brown, and brown. This mascara is affordable and available at your local supercenter or drug store. I loved the fact that I never had to worry about clumps with this mascara. However, I did have to apply more than one coat to the desired effect I wanted.

I think it would be perfect for someone with shorter lashes, versus those of us with long lashes. I rate this mascara 3 out of 5 stars. Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mascara with curved brush – This mascara has a larger, curved brush that really fattens your lashes and helps hold curl. It is not a curling mascara but, in my opinion, will help hold the curve your lash curler creates. It is available in two colors, black and black brown. This mascara is slightly more expensive but is also available at your local drug store or supercenter. I rate this mascara 4 out of 5 stars. Maybelline Sky High Curves Mascara – This mascara has an average sized, straight brush and delivers moderately on curl.

Maybelline claims this mascara can deliver a 30 degree curve, but I never saw those results. I got close a couple of times, but always had to use my eye lash curler before and after I applied the mascara. It is available in two colors, black and brown. It is also inexpensive and available at local retailers. I rate this mascara 2 out of 5 stars. The most important thing to remember is that you really have to test drive your mascara. Don’t be afraid to look for samples on the Internet or at the make-up counter in the mall department stores. Even better, if you have time to spare, spend some time at the department store make-up counter trying different brands.

Also, just because a brand is more expensive or has been around for a long time, it doesn’t mean it will work for you. Sometimes you will have to spend more to get the affect you want and sometimes that drug store brand will make your dreams come true!
